WHEN THE WORK IS COMPLETE (Suggested for Stage Five, Flow)
This month’s Master Class is Part 3 of a series following artist Terri Froelich prepare for a solo show in Europe. In this class, Terri has now completed and shipped the show. Join in to hear Nicholas and Terri discuss her process throughout, and what she has learned so far in retrospect. Also hear Nicholas share his experiences and recommendations for future shows.
Some key takeaways:
• Creating a body of work for a show can feel a bit like the stock market—there are peaks and valleys.
• Before you begin a show, gain clarity by knowing the gallery’s expectations. Ask questions.
• If the gallery has specific requirements, satisfy their desires, but also produce work you love. Communicate which pieces you especially love.
• Schedule in periods of time for the show such as your final finish on paintings and wiring, as well as packing and shipping.
• For future work, instead of going wide, go deep. Meaning, you don’t have to keep reinventing yourself. You can go deeper on what you’ve already chosen.
• Consider naming your show halfway through. What’s developing? What are you thinking or feeling? Keep a journal of all of this.
• Be confident in your work. Don’t be humble. Why can it NOT be you to have a highly successful show in a very prestigious gallery?
• You can gain great clarity on your work, and future work when you see it all hung together for the first time.
