A CALL AND RESPONSE (Suggested for Stage Four; Integration)

Heather Wilcoxon is a multi-media artist—drawing, painting, making films, working in ceramics and more—creating in whatever medium she is drawn to for a period of time. Her work has often featured light-hearted, almost cartoon-like visualization, but never trite. In fact, they are usually interpret very deep or dark subjects. No matter what the medium, there is always an emotional thread that connects her work. Learn about this wonderful artist’s journey, inspiration, approach and process in this insightful discussion with Heather and Nicholas.

In this interview you will learn:

  • Heather didn’t get serious about art until her 30s, took a master’s at 40 and it was another 10 years to really find herself in her art.
  • In Heather’s process she experiences something that is happening around her, internalizes it, reacts to it, then projects it out.
  • She follows what inspires her, speaks to her. She doesn’t stay in one place artistically for very long.
  • Often in her work, she presents a vessel or form to be the main personality, such as a head, a monster or a boat, then explores the many aspects of it.
  • Times between periods of inspiration and producing can feel like treading water—waiting for that next wave to come in.
  • Hitting dry spells or getting tired of your work leads to change. Embrace it.
