BALANCING RISK WITH DISCERNMENT (Suggested for Stage Three; Learning)

How do you balance play and risk, with discernment and application of the principles? Listen in to Susan and Kathleen discussing this, as well as tips for scaling up, using texture, and slowing down enough to make clear choices with works in progress.

Some highlights in the interview:

  • It is very helpful to take progress photos and make studio notes of your work in progress

  • If you find yourself bored or not having fun, make a bold move to engage with the painting again

  • When working on a painting, give yourself some time to pause and find the areas you really love

  • When you move up in size, your materials have to increase too… brushes, amount of paint, etc.
  • Ask yourself what can I bring in that will make my differences more powerful

  • When you’re painting expressively, before you load up your brush, ask yourself is this a dark or is this a light
